Anna Reid

Scottish screen printer Anna Reid is a Scottish screen printer who creates unique prints, often inspired by the land.

I see my work as studies in colour and texture.  My point of reference is often the land and landscape, or any environment I have experienced or am familiar with. I am interested in the fabric of the land, and the resonance of places I have experienced which linger on in me. What I remember, what floods my mind, is often details such as the shadow of a tree or the colour of the earth in a field, the strength and tone of the light as I squinted against it or the texture of tree bark as I walked by. I have become interested in this "remembering" itself, what is memory and how do different people and cultures imagine their environment?

In particular, edges, borders and boundaries of landscapes interest me - what lies at the edges of our own minds and imaginations? Marks made on the land, whether by natural and geological processes or carved out by people, where the layers of the past are visible in the present also inform my work.  As do forms which can appear to float or project.

For me, it is in the process of sketching, gathering, printing, noting and painting these often visual thoughts and feelings, which would otherwise lie dormant, that manifest and can lead to a sense of connection, belonging and conversation between inner and outer. It is this I hope to convey through my work.  In this way art and creativity has played an important part in my own well being and I think, has an implicit ability to do so.
